LONG BEACH, Calif. --
Long Beach police made an arrest in a 39-year-old cold case, but they need the public's help identifying the victim.

Police arrested Gary Stamp on May 20 for the May 28, 1974 murder. The 61-year-old confessed to raping, killing and dumping the body on Alamitos Beach. The body was found near Alamitos Avenue and Ocean Boulevard.

Investigators were unable to locate any evidence in the case that could be submitted for DNA analysis.

Stamp could not provide any additional information about the victim's identity other than saying her first name might have been Anna. Detectives believe Stamp met the victim in a bar or on the street in the downtown Long Beach area.

Authorities released a computer-generated rendering of Jane Doe No. 40. She is either white or Hispanic, was in her late teens to early 20s, 5 feet 2 inches, about 135 pounds, with long brown hair and brown eyes. She was wearing a two-piece pantsuit with a black faux-fur coat and black boots. She also had a 14k white gold ring with a small diamond solitaire. Police say she had a scar on top of her left hand.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Long Beach Police Department Homicide Detail at (562) 570-7244, or call the Los Angeles Regional Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.

Stamp is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday in Long Beach Superior Court.
