Florida detectives hope new images will help ID victim in 1989 cold case murder
Published September 11, 2012 By Joshua Rhett Miller, | Fox News

Forensic experts from a Florida university have helped detectives recreate the likeness of a man murdered nearly 25 years ago, working with little more than a pile of bones, teeth and patches of mummified skin.

The remains of the unidentified man, who was shot twice, were found in 1989 near an orange grove by an artifact hunter in Dade City, Fla. Authorities believe he had been dead for as long as two years.

“The body was found fully skeletonized,” said Detective David Boyer of the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office. “There was just bones.”

In a scene straight out of television's "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," digital facial imaging conducted by Erin Kimmerle, a forensic anthropologist from the University of South Florida, helped generate a composite sketch of the man. And by rehydrating and cleaning the man's mummified skin, Kimmerle determined he had several tattoos on his left arm, including those of a Confederate flag, a Nazi symbol and the initials "HFD."

The man’s boots were significantly worn to the point that he may have walked with a limp or had a “strange gait,” Boyer said. The body also was found with mismatched tube socks, Givenchy eyeglasses and had several missing teeth, as well as well-made dentures. Detectives estimate the man was between 30 and 50 years old.

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco told reporters during a press conference on Monday that he’s hopeful the Kimmerle's work will lead to new information in the cold case.

“There’s somebody out there that once they see this photo, it’s going to bring back some memories,” Nocco said. “Somebody knows something out there.”

Boyer said the man’s hair length and style is based on statements from the man who found the body, recalling that his hair was dark reddish-auburn and long enough to be worn in a short ponytail.

“We’re really looking for the public’s involvement in this case because that’s what’s going to solve it,” he said.

Nocco, meanwhile, said he’d like to solve the case to give the man’s relatives some closure.

“Even if it’s 20 years later, we’re still going to look into these cases,” Nocco said. “Not only for the fact that we want justice to be served, more importantly, there’s a family out there that lost a loved one. They need resolution.”

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Pasco Sheriff's Office at (800) 706-2488.

Nocco also praised the high-tech work by Kimmerle and Boyer in the case.

“A lot of times we watch TV and we watch CSI and it’s a nice hour-long show and everything’s solved very quickly,” Nocco said. “Well, I can tell you Detective Boyer and Erin Kimmerle, they’re the real CSIs. They are really out there figuring out what is going on … When you realize the work that went into it, we’re able now to identify the tattoos that were on him.”

Dade City Cold Case Heats Up With Composite Image Of Unidentified Victim
    By Michael McLaughlin

More than 20 years since police found a dead body near a Florida orange grove, they still don't know the victim's identity. But thanks to digital facial reconstruction, detectives at least know what he looked like.

The 1989 cold case in Dade City had stumped the Pasco County sheriff's office, because the murder victim's remains were little more than bones and some patches of skin when discovered. On Monday, however, the department released a composite image of what they believe "John Doe" resembled.

Erin Kimmerle, a forensic anthropologist from the University of South Florida, utilized a two-dimensional computer program to envision what the victim looked like in life.

“There’s somebody out there that once they see this photo, it’s going to bring back some memories,” Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said, according to Fox News. “Somebody knows something out there.”

The possibility of cracking the case was heightened by the recreation of distinguishing tattoos, including a Confederate flag and Nazi swastika, that might jog someone's memory. The initials HFD appear at the bottom of the bicep tattoo.

Investigators rehydrated dried skin from the victim's left arm to put together the colorful markings that also featured images of a dragon and a naked woman's body.

The victim, who was shot twice, had lain on the ground for as long as two years until police were notified. He wore mismatched socks and cowboy boots, was missing several teeth and had Givenchy eyeglasses.

The hairstyle in the composite image stems from the statement of a witness who found the body.

The man's age fell somewhere between 30 and 50 and he stood 5 feet, 7 inches tall.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Pasco Sheriff's Office at (800) 706-2488.

T-shirt connects Florida cold case to South Dakota
Pat Butler Sep 11, 2012

A Florida sheriff’s detective is taking a new approach to a 23-year-old murder case that might have a South Dakota connection.

Pasco County Sheriff’s detective David Boyer specializes in missing persons and has persuaded his supervisors to let him help identify a man whose skeletal remains were found in an orange grove in Dade City, Fla., in January 1989.

The victim, who was shot twice, wore a sleeveless “Black Hills of South Dakota” t-shirt, blue mechanic’s uniform pants with “Randy” inscribed on the waistband and worn, light brown cowboy boots. The white man had auburn hair and his age is estimated at between 30 and 50 years old.

“This is a cool case, we’ve got a lot of stuff going on,” Boyer said in a telephone interview Monday from his office in Dade City. Boyer is concentrating specifically on identifying the victim.

“I’m not interested in who killed this guy, somebody did though,” he said.

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco called a press conference Monday morning to introduce Boyer and forensic anthropologist Erin Kimmerle from the University of South Florida who revealed the latest efforts made to identify the homicide victim.

Pasco County takes cold cases very seriously, Nocco told reporters attending the press conference in Florida.

“We’re looking for the public’s help because that’s what’s going to solve it,” Boyer said.

Forensic evidence gathered when the victim was found suggested he died between six months and two years prior to the discovery of his body. That hasn’t changed, Boyer said.

Boyer started working on the case in May by re-examining the evidence gathered at the scene. He also called upon people like Kimmerle who have helped him identify missing persons in the past.

Kimmerle believes the man may have been younger than first thought, between 30 and 40 years old, Boyer said.

Using the victim’s skull, Kimmerle created a digital reconstruction of what the victim may have looked like. The man wore plastic framed Givenchy glasses. His estimated height was 5 feet, 7 inches.

Boyer said the victim had high quality upper and lower dental plates.

More detailed DNA evidence was also recovered.

Another forensic specialist managed to reconstruct tattoos on the man’s left arm by using the mummified skin recovered with the remains.

A tattoo on the victim’s bicep has the initials “HFD” and includes wings, flames, a cross, rebel flag and swastika. The tattoo on his lower arm depicts a green flaming dragon winding down his arm around a **** woman wearing red high heels, all on a rebel flag background.

“I’m hoping that someone says ‘Hey, I recognize that…’,” Boyer said.

Boyer has posted Kimmerle’s image and all the information available on the victim on the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System website at www.namus.gov. The information can be found by going to Unidentified Persons Database, then UP 1191.

Anyone with any information on who the victim could be can contact Boyer at 352-518-5002.
