Fire probed as double murder

Matt Tuck, Copy Editor Sep 17, 2003

For the second time in three days, Polk County is the focal point of another murder investigation.

Two Cedartown residents, whose names have not yet been released to the public, were found dead inside a burning home on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at approximately 1:26 p.m. A third victim was life-flighted to an Atlanta hospital, police said.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Jerry Scott said the two deaths are being ruled as murders. “We’re investigating it as a double homicide,” Scott reported.

The incident began with a house fire call at 506 Seventh Street.

Upon entering the house, firefighters located the two victims in the back of the residence.

The third victim, police said, was able to get out of the residence and into the yard, where EMTs later evaluated his injuries. He was soon transported via helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital. Wednesday morning, the victim was listed being in critical condition.

“We do have two fatalities,” Cedartown Fire Chief Kenneth Roberts stated. “There’s nothing on the cause of the fire right now. When we got here, all we did was put it out until the investigators could get on the scene.”

From the outside, the Seventh Street home shows little ruin. Most the damage, Scott said, was contained internally.

Within hours, the GBI and the State Fire Marshall’s K9 Unit were in the area to assist the Cedartown police and fire units. As of press time, the GBI crime scene technician was slated to process the house.

The belief at this time is that a person intentionally started the blaze. “There’s a pretty good idea [that the fire was intentionally set],” the GBI agent stated. “We’ll wait for the fire marshal to make that determination.”

Sources confirmed that the three victims' hands were tied with duct tape, but they were not gagged.

As of press time, the GBI had not named any suspects nor had they offered a suggested motive. This is the third murder investigation conducted in Cedartown in the last three days.

On Sunday, Sept. 13, 56-year-old Glen Glaze, of a Cedartown address, was found on the side of Potash Road, the victim of a gunshot. Polk County Police reported that Glaze was shot while riding his motorcycle. He was reported deceased upon officer arrival.

Polk Coroner Tony Brazier said Tuesday that the GBI State Crime Lab has ruled that Glaze died of a single shot to the chest.

No suspects have been named in that case, either.

Police prepare to bury unidentified slaying victim
Web posted Tuesday, November 4, 2003

Associated Press

CEDARTOWN, Ga. -- The unidentified victim of a double killing and arson will be buried in an unmarked grave in the Rest Haven Cemetery unless police get help in identifying the girl.

The victim, believed to be a teenager, was one of two killed on Sept. 16. "If we don't find out who she is," detective Steve Molock stated, "the city will probably have to bury her in an unnamed grave."

Trey Litesey, Polk County coroner, said the state crime lab is studying the body to determine the girl's exact age. When those studies are complete, the girl will be buried.

Identification has been difficult, Litesey said, because the victim was possibly an illegal immigrant with no birth or dental records in the United States.

"That's why it's so difficult. There's probably someone who knows who she is, but they might be afraid to come forward because they're also illegal aliens," he said.

The other shooting victims, Arturo Torres Ventura and 17-year-old Cesar Juarez Vasquez, were identified weeks after the crime. All three reportedly were bound and shot in the head. Their bodies were then set on fire, police said.

Ventura was the only survivor. After nearly two months, Ventura he remains in a hospital and is unable to communicate with investigators. The family took Vasquez's body to Mexico, while the unidentified victim will be buried at Rest Haven under the name "Jane Doe," in the event no one claims her body.

"Maybe someone will come forward," he said. "Everybody needs a name and not a case number," Litesey said.

Anyone who may know the girl's identity is asked to call the Cedartown Police Department.

Man charged with 3 murders

MATT TUCK, Standard Staff Writer Feb 3, 2004

Daniel “Oscar” Villena-Reyes faces charges of murder, arson and kidnapping. A Cedartown man has been charged with the murders of three people who were tied up and shot and their bodies set on fire last September, authorities said Monday.

Daniel “Oscar” Villena-Reyes, 32, 634 Georgia Ave., Cedartown, was in the Polk County Jail when he was served with warrants charging him with murder (three counts), kidnapping (three counts), arson, burglary, theft by taking, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and tampering with evidence, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

He was denied bond Monday morning by Magistrate Judge Annie Ruth Duke, according to jail officials. The warrants were served on Villena-Reyes on Friday by the Cedartown Police Department.

Villena-Reyes is accused of abducting and murdering Cesar Juarez Vasquez, 17, Arturo Torres Ventura, 30, and a young girl whose identity is still unknown.

The suspect and an accomplice allegedly entered a home on Sept. 16 and bound all three victims. Vasquez, Ventura and the girl were then moved into a bedroom and each shot in the head. Villena-Reyes and his cohort later set fire to the bodies, according to the warrants.

“The fire was set on purpose and for the purpose of covering up or eliminating any evidence of a triple murder that these two suspects had just committed,” the warrants stated.

After the murder, the suspects allegedly took Vasquez’s car and fled. The bodies of Vasquez and the girl were found by firefighters responding to the blaze at the home. Ventura was hospitalized and later died in an Atlanta hospital.

Police have not issued warrants for the second suspect, said Chief John Dean. Villena-Reyes had been in jail since Jan. 10 on charges of possession of marijuana and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Upon being booked at the jail, the Department of Immigration and Naturalization placed a hold on him, keeping him behind bars indefinitely.

On Dec. 11, police charged Felipe Carmona Romero, 30, of a Cedartown address, with pimping, pandering and keeping a place of **** at 506 Seventh St. The U.S. Marshal’s Office transferred Romero to the Floyd County Jail on Jan. 15.

Cedartown detective Steve Molock would not comment on the case.

Thirty alleged drug gang members named in indictment

Five men accused of committing half the murders in Floyd and Polk counties in neighboring Georgia in 2003 were among 30 alleged drug gang members named in an indictment unsealed Monday by the U.S. Attorney’s office.

Josh Smith of Silver Creek, Shane Rosser of Centre, Ala., and Sammy Duque of Cedartown are implicated in the March 2003 shooting deaths of Floyd County residents Truitt Jerome “T.J.” Agan and Christopher Kane Fortenberry.

According to the indictment, Agan, 28, and Fortenberry, 29, owed Duque money for methamphetamine.

After Duque ordered Rosser to get the money, Rosser and Smith allegedly shot the two to death at their 1425 Cunningham Road home on March 27, 2003.

Also alleged to be gang members are Daniel Villenas-Reyes and Miguel Goicochea Perez, two Cedartown men accused of killing Cesar Juarez Vasquez, 17, Arturo Torres Ventura, 30, and an unidentified young woman in a September 16, 2003 murder-arson indictdent.
