DNA profile of Oklahoma's murdered 'lime lady' emerges after three decades

It was April 1980 when a group of fisherman discovered the body of a mystery woman along the banks of the North Canadian River in a case that has become Oklahoma's oldest unsolved murder.

The killers had covered Jane Doe's body in "quicklime," believing the chemical would hasten decomposition, but the substance instead "mummified" the body and preserved evidence, allowing the medical examiner to create a DNA profile of the woman -- long nicknamed "The Lime Lady" -- some 34 years after her death, authorities told FoxNews.com.

"We have never been able to identify this girl for all this time," said Capt. Bob Green of the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Department, who, along with a team of investigators, is working to match the woman's DNA with a known missing person.

Jane Doe was shot three times in the chest with a .45 caliber handgun and dumped in brush along the east bank of the North Canadian River in the town of Jones, about 20 miles east of Oklahoma City. The fair-skinned woman with shoulder-length brown hair, who authorities say was between 18 and 25-years-old, had been lying in the thicket for about 10 days when she was found on April 18, 1980. A dime along with fibers from her clothing were found inside her chest as a result of one of the gunshot wounds, Green said.

"I believe she was dumped there and that this was the second crime scene," he said. "She was killed elsewhere."

For more than three decades, authorities hoped a distinctive marking on the young woman's body would lead to a break in the case: a small, heart-shaped tattoo just above her left breast.

It was not until recently that authorities were able to create a DNA profile of Jane Doe. The medical examiner had preserved DNA from the body, even though forensic testing was not advanced in 1980.

Authorities from the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Department have been working with workers from North Texas State University's lab in comparing Jane Doe's DNA to the profiles of other murder victims. To date, no match has been made.

Green said it is possible the victim lived in a foster home at some point in her life because no one reported a missing woman matching her description at that time.

"That might have been a reason why nobody ever looked for her," Brown told FoxNews.com. "She could be from anywhere – not necessarily Oklahoma."

Green said he believes more than one person was responsible for her death, and noting that, "violent outlaw biker gangs" were present in Oklahoma in 1980.

According to a profile created on the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, the woman is described as a white female, about 5-foot-6 and weighing 115 pounds at the time of her death. The report says Jane Doe had an appendectomy scar and extensive dental work, with some teeth out of alignment.

Green said that once authorities positively identify the so-called Lime Lady, they will be much closer to finding her killers.

POLICE HOPE VICTIM LIKENESS HELPS CASE

The facial reconstruction of a homicide victim found near Jones on April 18 has been completed and Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation officials hope the technique will help them discover the identity of the victim.

The **** body of the white woman, covered with a powdery substance, was found in a ditch along the North Canadian River 1 1/2 miles east of Jones, police said.

Jones police chief Ray Kerr said an autopsy by the State Medical Examiner's office showed the woman had been shot three times in the chest with a large caliber gun, possibly a pistol.

Kerr described the woman as freckle-faced, 18 to 23 years old, weighing about 120 pounds with shoulder length, straight brown hair and crooked teeth.

Pictures of the victim's reconstructed face were released to the news media Wednesday and pictures will be distributed to lawmen throughout the region today, OSBI spokesman Paul Renfrow said.

"We've been in contact with law enforcement agencies throughout the nation. We'll send copies to almost every law enforcement agency in the country," he said.

Although police are still checking information gathered from people who called after the OSBI and the Jones Police Department released a composite drawing of the woman in April, many leads have been eliminated, Renfrow said.

Many of the calls have been in reference to a red, heart-shaped tattoo outlined in blue over the victim's laft breast, he said.

"We got a lot of calls. A lot of them we could rule out immediately but a lot were good enough to follow up. "We're hoping, with this relatively new technique that someone will recognize her and call us," he said.

The technique has been used by OSBI in the past and provides a more lifelike look than drawings, officials said.....

It was two years ago Sunday when a fisherman found her body, covered with lime, on the banks of the Canadian river near Jones. Oklahoma crime agents are still looking for the murderer of the young woman who was shot to death. Her **** body was left on the bank of the river where it was found April 18, 1980.

Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokesman Paul Renfrow said Sunday the agency is again appealing to the public for any leads that might solve the mystery. Attempts at identification, including fingerprint comparisons, the circulation of a composite drawing of the victim, and a facial reconstruction made with modeling clay sculptured over the scull, have failed.

Renfrow said the case is one of the few in which the agency has made such extensive yet unsuccessful efforts at identification. The woman is described as being 18-25 years old, weighing 118-120 pounds. She has shoulder-length medium to light brown hair with a fair complexion and freckles. Her most unusual identifying mark, however, is a small red and blue heart-shaped tattoo over the left breast........

On April 18, 1980, an unidentified female was located on the east bank of the North Canadian River, 20 miles east of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and very near in proximity to the town of Jones, Oklahoma. Her identity is still unknown, but police feel there is someone out there who holds the key to her identity.

The Oklahoma County Medical Examiner�s Office at the time determined that she was a white female, aged 18 to 25 with light, reddish-brown, shoulder-length hair and being of a height of 5'6" or 5'7". The young woman weighed about 120 pounds. The woman's skin was fair with soft freckles dotting her face and upper torso.

She had irregular teeth with numerous areas of restoration. Her teeth were in excellent condition, indicating good oral hygiene and her wisdom teeth were missing. The female had an appendectomy scar on her lower abdomen and a tattoo on her upper left chest of a red and blue, professionally rendered tattoo of a heart with a scroll like line going through the heart. The heart and line was done was in blue ink and center of heart is colored in red ink.

The death of the woman was ruled a homicide in 1980. She was shot 3 times in the chest area with a .45 caliber pistol. Police determined that the woman was likely shot at another location and dumped at the river's edge. A dime was found inside a chest wound on the woman along with a .45 caliber bullet, indicating that she had been dressed when she was shot or holding a handbag in front of herself. The victim�s body was found ****, laying on her back, and covered in lime.

Bob Green is an investigator with the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force in Oklahoma City. In January 2012, he took command of the criminal investigations division at the Oklahoma County Sheriff�s Office, and recently decided to take a new look at one of the older, unsolved cold cases. "The �Lime Lady� really seemed interesting and I thought if we could at least get her identified we might get somewhere. This is my effort alone and I am still reviewing what is in the case file. She has got to be someone�s somebody, and they need closure as well. She was in her early 20s and could still have a parent living or a sibling," he said.

Many years have passed since this Jane Doe was first discovered, but the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Department has never stopped trying to identify her. Through the years, several sketches were drawn of her, and of her tattoo. Recently police released the actual photo of the woman's tattoo in hopes that someone would see it and remember it.
