Jane Doe Recovered 1986 - near Malad, Idaho

“Jane Doe” was found in October 1986, not far from the remains of Patricia Campbell and Tina Anderson, whose remains were found in 1981. (Patricia and Tina disappeared from Pocatello in 1978) She is believed to be a Caucasian female aged 12-16 at the time of death. She was originally reported to have been black or of mixed race, but opinion varies. Extensive searches of runaway reports and missing person databases have turned up empty.

Some have theorized the same person/people who murdered Tina Anderson and Patricia Campbell may have had something to do with Jane Doe’s death, since finding three sets of remains so close to each other my not be coincidental.

If you have information about her identity, contact the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.

Partial skull lost by local law enforcement has now been found

The partial skull of an unidentified person that had been lost by law enforcement for several years has now been found and authorities are investigating how it could be linked to the unsolved abduction and murder of two Pocatello girls.

Oneida County Sheriff Arne Jones confirmed to the Journal this week that the lost partial skull first discovered by hunters in October 1986 in the Trail Hollow area of Oneida County has been located and is now undergoing analysis by the FBI.

“We are just hoping to get some more information about the remains to give us a direction of where to go or look next,” Jones said.

He would not speculate on how long it will take the FBI to complete its analysis of the partial skull.

Jones confirmed the partial skull was missing for several years but he would not identify the local law enforcement agency found to be in possession of the partial skull or explain how it was located. Jones did confirm that the skull submitted to the FBI is the one that went missing while in the possession of local law enforcement.

The identity of the person this partial skull belongs to remains a mystery, though several forensic and cold case experts have developed unverified theories over the years. According to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, the gender, race, height and weight of the person the skull belongs to remain unknown.

Skull identified more than 30 years after it was found by hunter in Southeast Idaho

In October 1986, a hunter in Oneida County found the skull of an unknown victim 400-500 yards away from where partial remains of two teenage girls from Pocatello were found in 1981.

Tina Anderson, 12, and Patricia Campbell, 15, were last seen at Pocatello’s Alameda Park during a 1978 Pioneer Day celebration.

This unknown skull was initially identified as a third victim, possibly of mixed-race descent according to experts in the 1980s. For years, the public wondered and speculated as to her identity.

Last year, members of the Idaho Cold Cases Facebook page including myself donated $5,000 towards the forensic identification of this skull by Othram Labs in Texas.

Thankfully, Dr. Samantha Blatt at Idaho State University played a vital role in coordinating necessary information and collection samples between the parties to start forensic genealogy work.

Past Oneida County leaders, most notably Sheriff Jeff Semrad and Lt. Patsy Sherman, Capt. Paul Newbold from Bingham County, Pocatello police detectives, and many others from various agencies worked this case for over 40 years.
