A hiker discovered the victim's partially clad body in a makeshift campsite at the Rainbow Falls Campground in the Pike San Isabel National Forest, between Woodland Park and Deckers off Highway 67. Investigators believe she may have been dumped at the location.

She was found within days of a nearby convention of the Vietnam Vets Motorcycle Club that met June 12-13, at the Horse Creek campground south of Deckers. Investigators have not been able to determine if the victim had any association to that group.

At the time of the initial investigation in 1993, investigators believed the victim to be between 15-19 years old. Since the discovery of her body, several forensic examinations have been conducted and additionally, a series of anthropological reconstructions of the victim's skull have been conducted in an effort to determine her appearance, age, and identity. After the most recent forensic examination of her skull, investigators now believe the victim to be 13 to 20 years old.

No trace of illegal drugs were found in her body, nor evidence of sexual assault by intercourse, however they have not ruled out the possibility of non-intercourse sexual assault/contact. Investigators found characteristics that indicated she might have been very well cared for prior to her death. She was healthy with no sign of disease. A national comparison of her fingerprints have not aided in identification. She may be a runaway from Louisiana.

In 2012, her remains were exhumed in order to obtain further DNA analysis. She is buried at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Castle Rock, Colorado.

Update on the Quest by the Douglas County Coroner’s Office to Identify Jane Doe

Jane Doe is the only individual who died in Douglas County and remains unidentified, according to available records. The Douglas County Coroner’s Office is committed to identifying her, and has undertaken steps to finally reunite her with her family.

Her remains were exhumed from her grave in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Castle Rock, Colorado on October 12, 2012. Bone samples have been sent to the University of North Texas in order to obtain more complete DNA analysis.

Step 2 involved sending Jane Doe’s skull to Samantha Steinberg, a phenomenal forensic artist at the Miami-Dade Police Department. Samantha has developed these forensic drawings of what Jane Doe looked like in 1993. Do you recognize her?

The Douglas County Coroner’s Office will continue on its quest to identify Jane Doe – if you recognize this drawing or have any information that would help identify Jane Doe, please contact the Douglas County Coroner’s Office at 303-814-7150 or at coroner@douglas.co.us

Quote:
CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (CBS4) – There’s a new clue that Douglas County authorities hope will help them identify a woman murdered 20 years ago.

She’s been known as “Jane Doe,” but with a new investigative tool, authorities are hoping they can put a real name on the murder victim.

Last October, Douglas County authorities exhumed Jane Doe’s body hoping to solve the 20-year old mystery.

“It’s not just a body, it’s a person, so we want to find out and reunite her with her family,” said Lora Thomas, Douglas County Coroner.

The woman was found dead at a Douglas County campground in 1993, thought to have been murdered. But she had no identification and was never identified, buried as an unknown.

Years ago investigators came up with a clay depiction of what the young woman might have looked like, but now a Miami-based forensic artist has produced a new composite drawing of Jane Doe. It’s much more detailed and much different than the earlier representation.

The new composite drawing of Jane Doe (credit: Douglas County Coroner)
“Everybody watches shows like CSI and NCIS because people love the mystery, they love the solution,” Thomas said. “We have a mystery but we haven’t been able to solve it. This is all about solving this mystery.”

To solve the mystery, after the exhumation, they sent the woman’s skull to the Miami artist. She then plotted key points to create the composite of the unidentified teenage girl, who might have been a runaway.

DNA from the body is also being examined as a possible lead.

Ultimately, investigators say their Jane Doe is someone’s daughter or sister and has a family somewhere wondering what happened.

“I have a brand new little granddaughter and I’m so enthralled with her that I just can’t imagine what it would be like if something happened to her and we didn’t know,” Thomas said.

Thomas says if anyone recognizes the picture to either call the coroner’s office or the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

25 Years With No Name

On June 15, 1993 in the Pike San Isabel National Forest in Douglas County, CO, a sightseer was wandering around while taking some photographs of the scenery. The sightseer came upon a makeshift campsite at the Rainbow Falls campground located between Woodland Park, CO and Deckers, CO right off Highway 67. As the individual drew closer to the campsite, they made a gruesome discovery…a decomposed body.

Upon further investigation by the medical examiner, it was determined that the white female victim had most likely been deceased for about 3 days prior to discovery. She was approximately 13-20 years old with shoulder length light brown or blonde hair that was possibly dyed. She was between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighed about 140 pounds. While the color of her eyes could not be determined, the medical examiner noted a surgical scar that indicated that the victim had previously undergone a splenectomy at some point during her lifetime. The victim had pierced ears and her teeth were in excellent condition with no fillings. Lastly, the medical examiner determined that the manner of death was homicide due to blunt force trauma to the head.

The victim was found wearing several pieces of jewelry (pictured below), but the clothing that she had on gave investigators their first and most promising lead.

The unidentified female was wearing a black short-sleeve “Harley Davidson” t-shirt with a picture of a motorcycle (pictured below). This was a significant piece of evidence because just days earlier between June 12th and 13th there was a convention of the Vietnam Vets Motorcycle Club. The convention was held at the Horse Creek campground, located just south of Deckers, CO. After running down the lead, investigators were not able to determine if the victim was associated with the out of town motorcycle club.

“Right now we are just hoping to work on an identification,” explains Detective Cirbo with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Unit. “Without knowing who she is we cannot do any backstory investigation on her to find out why she had been in that area or who she may have been with.”

Several years ago, investigators created a clay depiction (below left) of what the unidentified female may have looked like. Then in October 2012 the body was exhumed for further DNA collection and was used to create a new composite (below right) of what the victim may have looked like.

June 2018 marks 25 years since this young woman’s body was discovered.

25 years since she lost her identity, her name, her life.

25 years searching for answers.

Can you help solve this 25-yearlong mystery?

Police: Body Found in 1993 ID'd as Missing Colorado Woman
Authorities in Colorado say the body of a woman found at a makeshift campsite in 1993 has been identified, reigniting the search for the person or people responsible for her death.

By Associated Press, Wire Service Content Aug. 13, 2020, at 6:35 p.m.

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. (AP) — The body of a Colorado woman found at a makeshift campsite in 1993 has been identified, reigniting the search for the person or people responsible for her death, authorities said.

The Douglas County sheriff's office announced Thursday that Rebecca Ann Redecker, 20, was identified more than 27 years after her remains were found. The identify of the Colorado Springs woman was made through the use of investigative genetic genealogy, The Gazette reported.

Deputies responded to a report of a body found in the woods in the Pike National Forest on June 15, 1993, Sheriff Tony Spurlock said, adding that he was a deputy when the remains were first found. Detectives attempted to identify the body then, but were unable to for years before the case went cold.

“Over the years the case had been looked at several times to see if any new investigative tools may assist in identifying the remains,” department officials said in a statement. “In July, our cold case detective received information that finally led to the identification of the remains — a reported missing woman who spent most of her young life in and around Colorado Springs.”

The cause of death remains undetermined, Spurlock said.

Anyone with more information is asked to contact deputies. Metro Denver Crime Stoppers is also offering up to a $10,000 reward for information leading to arrest of the those involved.

Spurlock said the department is in touch with her mother and brother, who are cooperating and providing new information about Redeker, KMGH-TV reported.

Colorado ‘Jane Doe’ Found in 1993 Identified as Rebecca Ann Redecker Through DNA Technology
CRIME

2:12 PM PDT, August 14, 2020 - Inside Edition Staff

Twenty seven years after she was labeled “Jane Doe” by officials in Colorado, Rebecca Ann Redecker has been given back her name, thanks to advances in DNA technology, officials said.

The 20-year-old woman's body was discovered in June 1993 near a Colorado campground in the Pike National Forest. Redecker's cause of death is still undetermined, but authorities indicated they believed others were involved in or responsible for her death.

"I cannot stress enough that if you knew anyone, or you knew Becky, or you had anything connected in Becky’s life, please call our office, and help us identify the suspect, or suspects that were responsible for her death, and leaving her body, in the National Forest, without a name for all these years," Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock said during a news conference.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office made the announcement Thursday afternoon and said in a statement that “Over the years the case had been looked at several times to see if any new investigative tools may assist in identifying the remains.”

Eight years ago, investigators exhumed the woman's body in effort to get a DNA sample, which was then taken and entered to a national database, but failed to produce a match.

In January, the sheriff's office teamed up with United Data Connect, a Denver-based forensic science company, to sequence the DNA sample obtained in 2012 and conduct genetic genealogy analysis. As officials and experts built family trees through research and evidence, they slowly were able to find matches.

Last month, a detective received new information that led to the identification of the remains.

Authorities say they are in touch with the late woman’s mother and brother. Her father passed earlier this year, cops say.

The sheriff said his detectives want to talk to anyone who knew Redecker, who they said was homeless, or who she may have been spending time with in the summer of 1993.

Anyone with more information is asked to contact deputies. Metro Denver Crime Stoppers is also offering up to a $10,000 reward for information leading to arrest of the those involved.
