Local law enforcement making preparations for Hells Angels

Jul 9, 2002

Scott Schwebke

MONTROSE -- Local law enforcement agencies are preparing for an influx of Hells Angels expected to travel through Montrose later this month en route to a motorcycle rally in Gunnison.

About 400 Hells Angels from around the country are expected to gather in Gunnison July 21-29. With family and friends, the Hells Angels contingent is expected to swell the town of 5,500 by an added 1,500.

The Montrose Police Department and the Montrose County Sheriff's Office plan to have all available officers on standby during the duration of the rally to prevent any trouble locally.

"We are hoping that we don't have any problems, but we will be prepared if there are," said Montrose Police Chief Gary Mecham.

Local law officers are hoping for the best but are prepared for the worst, particularly if some of the Hells Angels decide to camp near Montrose because there are no accommodations in Gunnison, Montrose County Undersheriff Dick Deines said.

"You've got to expect problems because everybody else, wherever they have been, has had problems," he said.

The Colorado State Patrol plans to keep close tabs on the Hells Angels, said Trooper Gordon Strople.

"We will watch them, but we won't stop them unless they give us a reason to stop them," he said.

MPD officers recently received training from the Colorado State Patrol regarding tactical and safety procedures to deal with the Hells Angels, Mecham said. During the rally, area law enforcement agencies will share intelligence on the Hells Angels' activities. The MPD also plans to send three officers to Gunnison during the rally as a preventative measure.

More than 200 police officers -- including three from the MPD -- sheriff's deputies and Colorado state troopers and SWAT team specialists will be on Gunnison streets or staged for quick response if trouble should occur, Gunnison Police Chief Jim Keehne said. "Hopefully, it will be a non-event," he said. "All we can do is base our experience on their (the Hells Angels) past performance, which of late hasn't been very good."

Last month, two prospective Hells Angels were shot and wounded along a highway near Laconia in central New Hampshire. The next day a man was beaten in Laconia by Hells Angels members, though police say the two incidents appeared unrelated.

In April, three people were killed in Laughlin, Nev., as Hells Angels and Mongols, a rival motorcycle gang, engaged in a gun battle inside a casino. The last Hells Angels rally in Colorado in 1996 triggered a gunfight between bikers at a hotel in Steamboat Springs.

Authorities working on 2002 cold case

Posted: Thursday, Aug 5th, 2010
BY: TERESA L. BENNS

SAGUACHE — Nearly eight years have passed since a hunter on horseback discovered the body of a man lying in a ravine in the Rio Grande Forest just off a dirt road about 14 miles west of Saguache.

The body was partly frozen when found Oct. 12, 2002 and it has not been determined how long it may have lain in the ditch. The man was wrapped in black plastic secured with duct tape and was clothed only in a Harley Davidson T-shirt and black briefs. Fort Washington, Maryland was printed on the back of the T-shirt.

Saguache Undersheriff Dan Warwick has made a consistent effort over the years to identify the body and at one time hoped to have the face of the man professionally reconstructed and circulated for identification, but that opportunity has passed.

“This man has a family somewhere,” Warwick said. “I want this case brought back into the public eye so that we can identify this person and give him a proper burial.”

Currently the body is interred in an unmarked grave as a John Doe. Warwick believes that someone has clues that would help establish his identity based on what he was wearing and personal information found with the man.

An autopsy attributed the cause of death to two gunshot wounds to the head, fired at close range. The autopsy also determined the man was about six feet, five inches tall and weighed between 235-240 pounds.

No eye color could be determined but it is thought the man’s hair may have been brown. He was probably a white man, possibly in his late thirties. No identifying marks, tattoos or broken bones were detected during the autopsy.

Because the man had no teeth and no dentures were found at the scene, it is believed he was sleeping at the time of his death. Fingerprints taken in 2002 have never returned a hit to assist in identification.

One clue that has intrigued investigators over the years is what they found when the black plastic casing was first removed — the man had been wrapped in a handmade, antique quilt, the kind families preserve as heirlooms from generation to generation.

Authorities over the years have speculated that because the man was found not long after the last Hells Angels rally was held in Gunnison, he could have ridden to the rally from out of state and met with foul play in that time frame. But until an identification is made, it will be hard to determine whether there is any real connection to the rally.

Two Saguache County sheriffs have investigated the case only to come up empty-handed. Rural sheriff’s offices are notoriously short-staffed and deputies overworked, but patience wins the day and Warwick is a patient man. He continues to check missing persons’ lists and keep his ears open for anyone looking for a father, son, brother, uncle or grandson.

“Everyone has drawn a blank in this case,” Warwick said. “But I just can’t give up on this guy.” Warwick asks anyone with information about this case to contact him at 719-655-2544.

Valley cold cases haunt law enforcement

Posted: Thursday, Mar 24th, 2011
By JULIA WILSON Courier staff writer

SAN LUIS VALLEY —“Their voices may now be silent...those who may know the truth are not.”

The motto of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Cold Case Unit is the only hope for families and friends looking for closure when a murder remains unsolved or a missing person is not found.

A case is designated a “Cold Case” when all the available leads have been followed, new information stops coming in, and there have been no arrests.

But that does not mean the cases are forgotten.

“I have the files in my office and go over them regularly to keep them fresh,” Saguache County Sheriff Mike Norris said. Saguache County has two missing persons and one homicide listed by the CBI as cold cases.

The date of the John Doe murder is not known, but his body was discovered on Oct. 19, 2002.

“We’ve searched all the databases,” Norris said. “This one is hard to investigate because we don’t have an identity. If we knew who he was then we could have something to go by.”

DNA and fingerprints have been run through the databases with no results, Norris said.

Alamosa County Sheriff Dave Stong doesn’t forget his cold cases, either.

“We have the option of picking up the file of a cold case and running with it or turning it over to the CBI Cold Case team,” said Stong. “But whatever we choose to do, we do not forget them.”

Anyone having information on any of these cases can call their local law enforcement group, 911, or Crimestoppers at 719-589-4111.

SAGUACHE COUNTY, Colo. — Investigators are hoping facial reconstruction images of a man who was found dead in 2002 will help identify him and potentially lead to clues about who killed him.

The body of the man only known as John Doe was discovered off Colorado State Highway 114 in Saguache County on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002.

Saguache is located approximately 180 miles southwest of Denver.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) assisted the Saguache County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) with the recovery of the remains. John Doe was found wrapped in a blanket.

CBI
The coroner concluded that the cause of death was a homicide.

A forensic artist recently completed facial recognition sketches of the victim.

CBI
“Unfortunately, there was no identification, vehicles, or information located with the remains that would not only help investigators to identify the victim, but also locate the person(s) responsible for his murder,” said Sheriff Dan Warwick. “It’s a case that the sheriff’s office has actively worked over the years, and I am hopeful someone will come forward to provide a key piece of information to help solve this case.”

His race and ethnicity remain unknown, but the following information was provided by the coroner.

Unknown male, unknown age—possibly between 40 and 60.
225-300 pounds and 6’5” tall
Brown hair
No tattoos or obvious scars
The victim was wearing black boxer shorts and a black Harley Davidson T-shirt from Fort Washington, Maryland.
