Mount Vernon Jane Doe

Unsolved

On February 14, 1988, a young woman’s naked body was found. She’d only been dead for about 6 hours, and her face was very recognizable, but still she was never identified. That’s just so sad.

The woman had been murdered. Her killer bound her hands and ankles, asphyxiated her, and inflicted blunt force trauma.

The body had been left in the street at 10 Carleton Avenue, Mount Vernon, Westchester County in the state of New York. Mount Vernon is only about 10 miles north of Manhattan.

The area where the victim was found is an industrial area, not residential. She was laid on the ground with her arms out to the side and her ankles crossed.

This Jane Doe was white, and between 18 and 30 years old. She was 5’3″ tall, and she only weighed 105 pounds. Her eyes were hazel. Her face had freckles. Her hair was long, straight, and blondish, maybe light brown. She had absolutely no cavities or fillings. She also had no tattoos or scars.

The victim had fake press-on nails that she’d painted reddish pink — a detail I doubt anyone would remember after all these years. Her face had some moles and freckles, and on the right side of her neck, just above her shoulder, she had a big, noticeable birthmark.

The victim, I think, had a surprisingly thick neck. Not freakishly thick, just thicker than I would have expected on such a slight figure.

The victim had pierced ears, but no jewelry was found on the body. Nothing was found on the body.

Now this Jane Doe, I must admit, confuses me a bit. Her eyebrows were in need of plucking. Indeed, she even had stray hairs on the bridge of her nose. Her armpits were unshaven. Those details make me think she wasn’t interested in getting herself a boyfriend. I remember the 80’s well enough to know armpits and legs were expected to be hair-free — especially when a girl was dating.

The confusing part is for me that the victim had recently shaved or waxed her pubic hair. I learned that Brazilian waxing arrived in New York in 1986, so this was a very recent trend. Now why would Jane Doe not shave her armpits and not pluck her eyebrows but remove all her pubic hair?

It is possible she shaved her pubic area for hygienic purposes rather than erotic ones. She might have had a case of pubic lice at one time, or wanted to avoid one.

It is also possible that her killer shaved the victim himself. There is no reason to think the poor woman wasn’t held for a period of time before she was killed. She’d been bound so she’d obviously been incarcerated by her murderer.

There have been many versions of the Mount Vernon Jane Doe’s face. That didn’t stop me, of course, from doing my own version. I chose to make her younger looking — closer to 18.

Most of the other versions emphasize her eyebrows, making them very dark. I think, since she was blondish, that her brows would have been lighter. The post mortem picture of the victim shows her with dark, wet hair so she’d obviously been recently washed. The water may have darkened her brows too.

It would be totally awesome if, after all these years, this Jane Doe were identified. That might also lead to the identity of her murderer who hopefully led a life full of suffering and pain and then died excruciatingly.

If anybody has any idea of who this Jane Doe is, please contact the Westchester County Medical Examiner’s Office at (914) 231-1600, or the Mount Vernon Police Department at (914) 665-2510. Refer to case number MEW 88-410. The listed contact person is Detective Christopher DiMase.

Westchester County Jane Doe (1988)

Another reconstruction of the Westchester County Jane Doe
On February 14, 1988, the "posed" **** body of a woman was found on a street in Mount Vernon, Westchester County, New York. The victim had been dead for approximately six to twelve hours, and was bound at the wrists and ankles and had died from ligature strangulation as well as suffering a beating.[9] She was aged 18 to 30, with hazel eyes and with bleached, light brown or blonde hair. She was 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighed 105 pounds, and had pierced ears without earrings. She had numerous freckles and moles (including a large and prominent mole on her neck). Her underarms had not been shaved for approximately two weeks, but her pubic area was recently shaved. This detail has led some investigators to presume she could have been a prostitute. The fact that the rest of the body showed an absence of shaving, it has also been suggested she was foreign to the United States, and could be of South American descent. Her nails were painted pink prior to her death.[10] No clothing was found at or near the scene.[11] An autopsy found that she had ingested **** and broccoli before her murder, which may have been the work of a serial offender.[12]

30 Year Old Westchester Cold Case Murder Victim ID’d as Veronica Wiederhold

Westchester County District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah announced that her newly-created Cold Case Bureau, in partnership with the FBI, Mount Vernon Police Department and the Westchester Department of Laboratories and Research, has successfully identified a woman who was found dead in Mount Vernon over 30 years ago.

Through the use of DNA testing and investigative genealogy, the victim, formerly known as “Jane Doe Mount Vernon” has officially been identified as Veronica Wiederhold. On February 14, 1988, at around 11:54 a.m., in the vicinity of 22 Carleton Ave. in Mount Vernon, Wiederhold was found dead and **** on the street by Mount Vernon Police.

“The remarkable work by our Cold Case Bureau and law enforcement partners has granted one family the certainty and ability to mourn for their loved one after 33 years. A main goal of this Bureau is to give closure to families of homicide victims, and we know this is pain that never goes away,” DA Rocah said. “I know firsthand that solving crimes is one of the best ways we can try to get closure to victims’ families.”

Wiederhold was last seen by her family in Brooklyn in late 1987 before she was found dead. She currently has family in New York City and out-of-state who have been notified of the Cold Case Bureau’s identification.

The Bureau is led by Assistant District Attorney Laura Murphy, who is assisted by Chief Investigator Daniel McKenna. Together they oversee the Cold Case Bureau and work collaboratively with other investigators in the District Attorney’s Office, the FBI Task Force, the Westchester County Department of Public Safety and law enforcement from across the county.

“There has been a lot of speculation over the years about the identity of this victim. We now know who she is: Veronica Wiederhold,” Murphy said. “This is why we continue working on these cases and never give up seeking justice for these victims.”

While the Mount Vernon Police Department has been diligently attempting to utilize new forensic science for several years to determine Wiederhold’s identity, the use of advanced genetic genealogy through the FBI made it possible to begin the process to successfully identify the victim.

When the Westchester Forensic Lab determined it had sufficient DNA from the victim, the FBI’s genetic genealogy unit was able to connect it to possible relatives who had submitted their DNA to a genealogy website. Family members then provided DNA samples to the FBI, which aided in the investigation.

The DNA match positively identified Wiederhold and a final identification was made in April.

“I am proud of the fantastic team that we have assembled in the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office that will join forces with our law enforcement partners across Westchester to address as many cold cases as resources allow,” DA Rocah said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Westchester District Attorney’s Office at 914-995-TIPS.
