Unidentified woman shot several times in the head in 1985, may be named ‘Darlene’

Posted 12:37 pm, July 20, 2017, by Michelle Pekarsky,

MISSOURI CITY, Mo. -- Investigators believe they could be getting closer to identifying a woman found dead in 1985 in Clay County, Mo., and they're appealing to the public for additional information to help confirm a tip provided to them by a caller.

In 1985, the African-American young woman was found dead in a field near Boyer Road and 210-Highway, east of Missouri City. She was murdered by several gunshots to the head. For 32 years she has only been identified as 'Jane Doe.'

Then, in October 2016, after Clay County released an updated drawing and described her race and age, the Crime Stoppers hotline received a call from someone who said he/she knew Jane Doe. He/she said they believed 'Jane Doe' was someone named 'Darlene'.

The caller further stated that 'Jane Doe' may have had two children and lived in Kansas City, Kan. The tipster said they'd occasionally ride back and forth to work together. The caller said he/she worked with Darlene at an envelope company in the Northland.

If you have information, the detectives of Clay County Sheriff's Department and Cold Case Homicide Squad 'seek your assistance in solving this brutal death,' the news release said.

"If you have any information no matter how trivial to please, call Crime Stoppers at 816-474-8477 (TIPS) or the Clay County Sheriff Dept. Cold Case Homicide Unit at 816-407-3700.

Detectives intensify efforts to solve 1985 cold case
Remains of woman found in field still unidentified

Updated: 6:46 AM CDT Mar 18, 2015

LIBERTY, Mo. —

Almost 30 years after a woman's remains were found in a rural Clay County field, the case is getting a new look.

Cold case detectives said they're making identifying the woman and solving the case their top priority.

"We're fairly confident that as we continue to work on this case, additional information will be obtained and we can become closer to a resolution," said Detective Shane O'Roark of the Clay County Cold Case Squad.

The unidentifiable partial remains were found in a field near Highway 210 and Boyer Road in 1985. A comb was also found at the scene, which remains as it did three decades ago.

Detectives have made a computer composite based on the woman's skull to suggest what she might have looked like. They said they believe she was in her early 20s, but they're not sure how or when she died.

Detectives have also sent the DNA evidence they found in 1985 to the University of North Texas Forensic Department in hopes that experts there will be able to turn up new information.

Investigators said they're hoping that the new attention to the case will trigger someone to call with helpful tips. Anyone with information about who the woman was and what happened to her is asked to call the Clay County Sheriff's Office.

Cold case partially solved with help from woman’s daughter

By Matt Flener
Updated: 6:13 PM CDT Sep 8, 2022

KANSAS CITY, Mo. —

A 39-year-old cold case just received a big break. Kansas City police and Clay County sheriff's investigators said they have identified the remains of Gwendolyn Robinson after her daughter Deoina Mitchell came forward this summer to reopen a missing person's case.

Mitchell was a toddler when her mom went missing in 1983.

Her request triggered a Kansas City police crime analyst's recollection of a composite released by the Clay County Sheriff's Office in 2016.

KMBC 9 Investigates has covered the case since 2015, when Clay County sheriff's deputies decided to reopen the case for a fresh look.

Unidentifiable partial remains were found in a field near Missouri 210 Highway and Boyer Road in 1985. A comb was also found at the scene, which remains as it did three decades ago. A DNA match confirmed the remains were Robinson's.

On Thursday, Mitchell stood beside police and prosecution officials to speak about the break in the case, asking for tips about the killer.

"Hopefully, someone will come forward with information so that whoever did this can just pay for what they did," Mitchell said.

Anyone with information about who the woman was and what happened to her is asked to call the Clay County Sgt. Chris Johnson at 816-407-3723 or CrimeStoppers at 816-474-8477.
