Granite County sheriff: Body found in Welcome Creek Wilderness

By KIM BRIGGEMAN of the Missoulian
Aug 11, 2014
Human remains found high in the Welcome Creek Wilderness area west of Rock Creek have been sent to the medical examiner’s office in Missoula.

Granite County Sheriff Scott Dunkerson said the body “had been there awhile” when a recreationalist spotted it Saturday. Dunkerson recalled a recovery team near darkness that evening. Membes of the Granite County Sheriff’s Office, Search and Rescue and the medical examiner’s office located the remains Sunday afternoon.

Access to the rugged wilderness area is 15 miles up Rock Creek. Dunkerson said the remains were in steep terrain and difficult to get to.

Dunkerson said he’ll release more information when he gets it from the examiners.

Reporter Kim Briggeman can be reached at (406) 523-5266 or by email at kbriggeman@missoulian.com.

MISSOULA, Mont. - On Saturday, August 9 a Missoula resident and recreationalist discovered human remains up the Rock Creek drainage in the Welcome Creek Wilderness.

According to Granite County Sheriff Scott Dunkerson, Granite County Search and Rescue, sheriff's office and a member of the medical examiner's office were able to located the remains on Sunday, August 10 around 1:30 p.m. The remains have since been sent to the Missoula Crime Lab for further investigation.

The Welcome Creek Wilderness is located approximately 25 miles east of Missoula. The 28,135-acre wilderness measures about 9 miles by 7 miles.

The Welcome Creek Wilderness is located in the U.S. state of Montana. Today, the crumbling remains of about a dozen miner's cabins dot the Wilderness, though only two are in fair condition. When the mines were abandoned, the steep mountains of Welcome Creek became a hideout for fugitives.

Hiker finds human remains in wilderness west of Philipsburg

Angela Brandt
Aug 11, 2014
State crime lab crews are assessing human remains found in the wilderness northwest of Philipsburg.

Granite County Sheriff Scott Dunkerson said a crew including deputies, search and rescue members and a medical examiner from the state crime lab trekked to the site in the Sapphire Range Sunday afternoon to gather the “older” remains for testing. A backpacker from Missoula found the remains Saturday then led the group in the next day, Dunkerson said.

The medical examiner took the remains back to the lab for analysis.

Dunkerson said he does not if it was a male or female, or any other details on the identity of the person.

The group first went to the site in the Welcome Creek Wilderness on Saturday then returned to the scene in the daylight Sunday to further investigate. The body was found about 15 miles south of the Rock Creek exit on Interstate 90.

“It’s pretty rugged terrain,” he added.
