A New Jersey Transit train struck and killed a woman who had wondered onto the tracks in Monmouth County early this morning, said Joe Dee, an NJ Transit spokesman.

Train No. 4785 on the North Jersey Coast Line hit the woman -- who has not been identified -- at 1:40 a.m. in Brielle borough, between Manasquan and Point Pleasant stations, Dee said.

The engineer spotted the woman as the train approached, sounding the horn and activating the train's emergency brakes, but couldn't stop in time. The victim wasn't near a station or grade crossing, Dee said.

Heading from Long Branch to Bayhead, the train had 20 passengers on board at the time. None were hurt, Dee said. Passengers were transferred to buses to complete their journeys, he said.

Regular service along the line resumed later in the morning.

Fisk Avenue In Brielle

The engineer saw the woman, who was wearing a white t-shirt with a red long-sleeved sweatshirt underneath, white Adidas sneakers with black stripes, and blue rosary beads. She was also wearing a wooden religious bracelet and carrying a large brown tote bag with the words "New York" on it. As the train approached, the engineer sounded the horn and activated the train's emergency brakes, but the train couldn't stop in time.

The incident occurred Sunday, June 15, 2008 at 1:38 a.m., south of Manasquan Station near Fisk Avenue in Brielle.

This is the same railroad crossing as the photograph from above. She was in a quiet suburban area when she was hit by the train.

Some of the bracelets have tiles with Catholic icons and some bracelets have Orthodox icons.
