Investigation continues into woman’s remains found in Ephratah

EPHRATAH – The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office continues to conduct an investigation into the unidentified remains of a woman that were found in the Town of Ephratah on Thursday.
Although the woman hasn’t been positively identified at this time the investigation has determined the remains belonged to a woman between the ages of 25 and 35 and at the time of death would have been approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall, Fulton County Sheriff Thomas Lorey said during a press conference on Friday.

“We do not have a name and we are still working on the identification,” he said.

He said the cause of death has still been undetermined and therefore can’t be deemed a homicide at this time. He also said the time of death hasn’t been determined but the body probably went undiscovered for “several years.”

Authorities said the discovery was made shortly after 11 a.m. on Thursday by an excavating crew working at a property within the town. Officials said the remains were found in a gravel pit where the crew was working.

Lorey said the area where the bones were found, just off Fical Road, has been closed off since the discovery to allow investigators to search for additional evidence.
He said the excavation crew was using the site for materials for an ongoing roadway project since the beginning of the month. The sheriff said as a result the department has yet to uncover all of the skeletal remains because they had been moved around the site during that time.

“During the construction process the remains were scattered and we are still recovering them,” Lorey said.

Fulton County District Attorney Louise Sira said despite not having a cause of death the remains are being deemed “absolutely suspicious” at this time. She said the State Police Forensic Investigation Unit is assisting her office along with the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department.

She said the case will require an extensive investigation into DNA and dental records to ultimately identify the remains. The sheriff said although the exact identity of the remains is undetermined the department has successfully eliminated at least one possibility.

“There have been rumors circulating that it may be the body of a missing woman from Johnstown but it has positively be ruled out that it is not her,” Lorey said. “We checked the dental records.”

Lorey was referring to Kellisue Ackernecht who disappeared on the night of Sept. 30, 2008, after leaving her job in Amsterdam. Her vehicle was later found engulfed in flames in the Frog Hollow section of Johnstown.

Sira said with there only being skeletal remains it may be difficult to determine if the victim suffered any soft tissue injuries that resulted in her death.
“There is a lot of forensic work being done today to help identify the remains,” the sheriff said.

Lorey advised anyone with information about the investigation to contact the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office.

“Our number one priority is to identify the remains,” Sira said. “Then obviously we want to determine how and when they got to that location.”

Remains found in Fulton County gravel pit are of woman

Police are investigating after skeletal human remains were found Thursday morning in a gravel pit in

Kyle Adams | December 18, 2015

The human remains found in a Fulton County gravel pit Thursday morning have been identified as a woman between the ages of 25 and 35, according to law enforcement.

Fulton County District Attorney Louise K. Sira said this evening that the woman was between 5-foot-2 inches and 5-foot-5 inches tall.

“So we’ve made significant progress today and obviously that definitely narrows our search pool,” Sira said.

The skeletal remains were found around 11 a.m. Thursday morning by an excavation crew working in a gravel pit off Green Road in the town of Ephratah, according to Sira. They were sent to Albany Medical Center for an autopsy Friday afternoon.

So far, little else is known about the remains.

Sira said it’s hard to determine yet how long the body had been there, but no soft tissue remained on the skeleton.

She said identifying the remains is the “number one priority” for law enforcement at this stage.

No cause of death has been determined, but Sira said the death is being treated as suspicious due to the body’s disposal in the gravel pit.

The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation, with cooperation from the New York State Police.

Sira said a Johnstown woman missing since 2008, Kellisue Ackernecht, has been ruled out by dental records.

As the investigation continues, Sira said investigators are still searching for missing bones from the skeleton and will conduct a DNA analysis to compare to missing people in the Capital Region, upstate New York, and then beyond if necessary.

2015 Ephratah bones discovery continues to puzzle investigators

January 31, 2019 06:49 PM

Thursday evening at 6 p.m. NewsChannel 13 launches a new series of reports profiling unsolved crimes from around the Capital Region. Some you'll have heard of. Others, you'll be learning about for the first time.

We'll be revisiting crime scenes, tracking down the people involved and sharing whatever new information we're able to uncover. It's all in the interest of generating new leads for investigators still eager to solve these cases.

Our first #ColdCase13 file is "Jane Doe" from Ephratah.

A crew moving gravel in December 2015 unearths something with an excavator. They think it's just trash – until they look closer. The "trash" was actually human remains that had been buried in a shallow grave.

This was an African-American female, presumptively in her early 20s and about 5 feet, 3 inches tall.

A forensic artist took the mostly skeletal remains and using clay, was able to create a rendering of what the victim might have looked like. However, in three years - investigators have been unable to put a name with the face. They're not even positive the person has been reported missing.

What they are positive of is this was no accidental death. This woman was murdered likely by someone who lived -- and may still live locally. Someone who knew the area well enough to choose a gravel pit far off the beaten path to bury the victim.

Investigators are eager to identify the victim, so they can then get to work tracking down her killer.
